"But sir," the young officer stammers nervously, "We were not well armed and were caught unawa..." "You were in command on that reconnoiter were you not?" He is ambitious and impatient just the type of officer I don't need and a perfect selection for this mission. "You may take one of my swords if you feel that you are not properly equipped." However, Martarem having seen in his favor iron weapons, intelligence, and overall tactical strategy, convinced his officers that this region had certain geographical, defensive, and resource advantages that could be turned to their benefit. The mountains provided an excellent barrier against outside forces, particularly large ones, as well as the fact that the river ... provides excellent transport and communication along the interior. Ultimately, he was also convinced that he could turn these beasts (wemics) into his own small army by raising them from their barbaric ways gaining their favor through the benefits of civilization. After studying these beasts, Martarem decided his best method of controlling them would be to create something they would value; something that he could control. He staged several defeats for his own army, in which the Wemics "seized" items of iron, amber, obsidian and so forth. He effectively created new items of trade, power, and prestige with which he could control them. Furthermore, in order to gain control over all of their kind he had to create a single leader he could overpower, something which the wemics did not already have. At the time they were ruled by eleven different clan chiefs with shaman advisors who represented venerable bloodlines (as far back as those leaders could trace their lineage). Essentially, he had to create one powerful chief, which he did by allowing the Tsenalii clan to obtain more iron weapons of power than the other clans. After patiently waiting and scheming for almost a decade, he took advantage of the wemic short lifespan. Regalalii, the son of Chief Tsenalii Sundabuna, raised under these new social circumstances and material drives, conquered the other ten tribes with indirect aid from Martarem. Martarem, setting one of his officers up as a puppet advisor to Regalalii, gained a foothold in the governing of the pan wemic clan. Regalalii, having succumbed to the trappings of civilization, was duped into creating, as a monument to his power and as a defense against those who would be jealous of him, a fortified palace complete with fortified towers and a full court. Now as a show of solidarity the others had to pay in amber, obsidian, and labor to their new Sun king. Geography Society Religion Politics Economics Cities International Relations |
